January 25, 2012 - Excellent - Quarrel is still the horribly compelling single-player game it's always been on mobiles, with an extra dollop of polish and a few new tantalising game modes for the console release - and all for the laughable sum of 400 Microsoft Points. It's with the addition of ranked online multiplayer, though, that Quarrel's finally evolved into the sedentary StarCraft for the pipe-smoking gamer that it always promised to be.
January 31, 2012 - Excellent - I would have been happy to continue to play Quarrel on my iPad and earn all of the GameCenter achievements, but the Xbox Live Arcade version offers up enough extra activities and enough of a challenge in multiplayer that I'm just as happy to split my time between the versions.
January 25, 2012 - Excellent - The XBLA game is arguably the superior version of Quarrel. That may change with the long-awaited iOS multiplayer update, but that will just bring them closer to parity. This game is every bit as enjoyable on the couch as it is on a train.
January 25, 2012 - Good - If you're already a fan of the iOS edition of the game, the crucial addition of online multiplayer is probably worth the $5 admission price on its own. If you have yet to experience the joy of Quarrel though, and you have any interest in either word games or strategic, turn-based positional battles, you'd be crazy to pass this one up.
January 31, 2012 - Good - With three friends, it's wonderful, the thrill of an against-all-odds victory that much sweeter when soundtracked by the anguished headset cry of a familiar voice. But word games are only as good as their dictionary is reliable, and while Quarrel has one of the best around, it's occasionally hamstrung by Microsoft's Victorian sensibilities.
February 2, 2012 - Good - Minor issues aside, Denki has created a wonderful, addictive game that I'm sure I'll be returning to throughout the year. Whether you're a dictionary-reading diehard or an armchair general, Quarrel has enough depth and charm to keep most gamers smiling.
January 25, 2012 - Good - Despite its flaws, Quarrel offers a robust experience for puzzle enthusiasts and wordsmiths alike, and at a cost of just 400 Microsoft points, you're sure to get your money's worth. It's a welcome relief from more standard fare and a good way to keep your gray matter in shape.
January 25, 2012 - Good - Its strategy is just complex enough to demand some skill, and breaking down words is right up every word nerd's alley. Quarrel is flawed, but selective players who know what they want will find themselves enraptured by a siren song written in eight-letter words.
February 9, 2012 - Good - Anyone with even the most passing of interest in wordplay should download themselves a copy immediately, and prepare to become entranced.
February 11, 2012 - Good - Scrabble is truly a game for the ages. It really is one of the simplest pleasures to create a word where before there was just a jumble of letters. It is this pleasure that Quarrel capitalizes on, by bringing word jumbles into the future.
February 8, 2012 - Good - Quarrel does have some odd quirks, such as claiming words like "Monday" don't exist while accepting more obscure words. But for logophiles, its mix of strategy and vocabulary is a true pleasure.
February 1, 2012 - Good - When it comes down to business, Quarrel does its best to puff out its chest, but loses breath quicker than expected upon first playing. There's no doubt this is a charismatic, challenging and fun way to spend your time, if you don't mind some irritating tendencies along the way.
February 2, 2012 - Good - The whole thing is wrapped up in a darling Fisher Price aesthetic and presented with wit and style. A lack of offline multiplayer and Microsoft's dodgy dictionary compromises the package, but it's got more modes than you deserve and a ridiculous 400 point price tag.
February 2, 2012 - Mediocre - Quarrel is a fantastic concept that challenges your vocabulary and mental prowess, but too many inconsistencies prevent it from fulfilling its promise.
