Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 8, 2012 - Good - While it's not a perfect product, EA knows how to make deep, full-featured sports games with high production values. In Grand Slam Tennis 2, developer EA Canada applies some of the lessons learned from the company's other franchises to create a game that excels in many areas while coming up short in a few important ones.
March 7, 2012 - Good - Featuring all four Grand Slam venues, including the famed Wimbledon, and a recognizable roster of iconic tennis stars like cover athlete John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, Grand Slam Tennis 2 certainly stands apart from the crowd in terms of authenticity.
February 9, 2012 - Good - There's room for improvement - chiefly in the variety of game modes, the selection of commentary snippets and the pace of the career mode - but for now, Grand Slam Tennis 2 is the best game of tennis that video games have to offer.
February 13, 2012 - Good - It's fair to say EA have been a little naive in their execution, perhaps never getting away from the casual audience the original game aimed to please. In doing so, plenty of players will feel alienated as the title never offers a significant challenge.
February 10, 2012 - Good - With a cast of legends past and present, a healthy smattering of modes and that trademark EA veneer, Grand Slam Tennis 2 is a solid enough release, if perhaps one more likely to win in a fifth set tiebreak than in straight sets.
February 10, 2012 - Good - The historic matches of ESPN's Grand Slam Classics mode are great fun to dip in and out of, but the main career mode feels wafer-thin and lifeless, damaged by a difficulty curve that takes far too long to kick in. The multiplayer holds it together. If you aren't picking it up for same-sofa action, the Xbox Live offering feels pleasantly meaty.
February 8, 2012 - Mediocre - The career mode lacks depth and fails to hold your interest for very long. Still, if EA Canada plans to make another tennis game in the next two to three years, as is the trend, there is potential for this franchise to have a long shelf life.
February 22, 2012 - Mediocre - It's damn hard to talk about video game tennis without bringing up Virtua Tennis, particularly when a game, like Grand Slam Tennis 2, hems so close to that original arcade formula. It's a facsimile that's executed well enough; there just aren't any good reasons to recommend Grand Slam Tennis 2 over the games that it cribs from.
February 9, 2012 - Mediocre - The player creator is woefully limited if you don't use the GameFace feature to import your photo, and the skill system doesn't engage you much during your career. Quite simply, there's little reason to choose this game over the far superior Top Spin 4.
