Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
October 28, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is inventive, fun, and does nearly everything right. From the music, to the gameplay, to the videos that play while you scratch, it sounds and looks beautiful.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - Freestyle Games has pulled off an impressive trick, crafting a game that holds true to its sister franchise while at the same time putting a unique spin on both the gameplay and the music. With so much of the classic rock catalog depleted, this genre needs to look to new and creative ways to keep the experience fresh. DJ Hero is a great first step.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - Guitar Hero usually receives most of the headlines, but DJ Hero is without question Activision's coolest rhythm game. The turntable has its drawbacks, but that soundtrack will give you a new appreciation for music and perhaps satisfy your DJ fantasy. Just don't pass this off as another game with a useless peripheral.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - Even as I got frustrated at the wonky controls and my inability to hit long combos, I still kept playing to hear the next track. DJ Hero is an interesting and welcome addition to the rhythm genre and its unique vibe should earn it as fair share of fans but it will also garner its fair share of critics as well.
October 31, 2009 - Excellent - Despite a few quibbles and a clunky menu, DJ Hero is the invigorating force that the music game genre needed. It's fresh, it's funky, and despite sharing a few visual cues with its guitar-based brethren, it's refreshingly original.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - In all it's a great package, and even if you're only vaguely into the kind of music on offer, you'll get weeks of fun out of it. DJ Hero does represent a big leap of faith - that £90/$120 price tag is daunting - but once you actually play it, you'll get it, and there'll be no turning back.
November 11, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is a great game, and a fantastic entry to the music game genre. It's as original and intuitive as they come, offering proof that innovation in the genre may be down, but not out. If you are at all a fan of electronic music or just curious at how DJ's work, then definitely check out DJ Hero.
October 26, 2009 - Excellent - A little headroom has been left for improvement with a sequel, particularly in the head-to-head battles and the way leaderboards display scores. But DJ Hero is already the most exciting music game around and is guaranteed to get the party started.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is a spectacular first effort for what, we imagine, could very well become a long and much-loved series. All the music's fantastic fun to play, [and] the contraption itself is a satisfying, well-implemented bit of plastic.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is an exciting and brilliantly realised package, and while it may not offer the fantastic co-op experience of some of its contemporaries, its slick gameplay and fantastic presentation make it a must-have title in an overcrowded genre.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is possibly the best rhythm action game I have ever played. It may still be finding its feet in the world, and it certainly has room to improve, but for a first effort it's managed to do almost everything right.
October 28, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero attempts to mold turntablism into a mainstream medium. It succeeds, but stumbles along the way. I didn't experience the sensation of scratching and mixing, until I turned it up to Expert difficulty. DJ Hero's debut is noteworthy, but there's much work to be done for the follow-up.
November 1, 2009 - Good - While DJ Hero accomplishes a lot in its first iteration, it's difficult to ignore all the opportunities the developers are missing. If developer FreeStyleGames can work on exploring a fuller range of music to be explored with the turntable controller and give players a little more freedom, then maybe DJ Hero has a long future ahead of it.
October 30, 2009 - Good - While very good fun, DJ Hero isn't nearly as feature-packed or creative as the guitar games, nor does it work as well on a basic concept level. But if you want in on some rhythm action without having to pretend you like rock music, you'll have a good time.
October 30, 2009 - Good - The failed promise of scratching is offset by the genuine thrill of making songs speak to each other. The focus on superstardom is humbled by the game's ambitious attempt to boil the richness of DJing down into a handful of gestures.
October 30, 2009 - Good - Weak multiplayer and control issues prevent it from being the instant classic Guitar Hero was four year ago, but FreeStyleGames has nevertheless created a slick and enormously enjoyable music game that deserves to succeed and evolve.
October 27, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero is a good game, one that will undoubtedly find a hardcore audience that appreciates it, flaws and all, and an interesting step forward for music games.
October 30, 2009 - Good - There's plenty of room for improvement, since there isn't much in the way of creative ability or battle variation, but the diverse track picks and simple control scheme help put together a game that will definitely keep the crowd hyped.
November 13, 2009 - Good - Continuing on from the success of the Guitar Hero series, Acitvision have produced yet another fantastic interactive music game and with it an ingenious new wireless DJ turntable peripheral.
November 4, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero will only give you a glimpse into the realities of mixing and scratching, with some of the coolest mash-ups I've ever heard to entertain along the way. For someone like me, who would rather get down with a set of tables than a six-string, DJ Hero is nearly a perfect medium for my fantasies of scratch-stardom.
October 29, 2009 - Good - Despite the sizable cost, DJ Hero is an enticing purchase. It captures the thrill of spinning together hot songs to make an electrifying mix, and it's one show that fans of rhythm games will not want to miss.
October 27, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero is one of the most refreshing, original games we've played in quite a while. Its addictive gameplay mechanics help it transcend its music and setting, resulting in a game that everyone will enjoy.
October 27, 2009 - Good - It's a bit barebones, and the turntable controller feels like it could have been better in a couple of spots. But as the start of something new, DJ Hero provides a very strong foundation that things like additional downloadable content or full-fledged sequels could really build on.
November 1, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero is a great addition to your music game collection that is going to provide you more hours of entertainment listening to some stellar mash-ups of songs new and old. This is one experience you cannot miss.
October 30, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero may not be a game an entire family will be clamoring to play, but it is certainly capable of entertaining an entire room full of people even though only one person, or no one, is playing. Like its guitar-driven ancestors it belongs firmly in the living room, albeit a noisy one.
October 28, 2009 - Good - Even without robust multiplayer, DJ Hero remains a thoroughly engaging new experience that is well-deserving of its heroic namesake.
October 30, 2009 - Good - Pushing a round bit of plastic back and forth shouldn't be cool. Yet DJ Hero not only makes it cool, it makes it fun. The only downside is that at £100, it's asking you to put your wallet on the line for an experience that offers the same thrills as GH, but still represents a big gamble if you didn't get on with that series.
October 27, 2009 - Good - Personally, I really loved DJ Hero, but I'm prepared to accept that it might not be for everyone. But understand that DJ Hero is a really fun game that is really well designed from top to bottom, and we really couldn't ask for that much more.
October 28, 2009 - Good - As fun as it is to blend two tracks in DJ Hero, Activision hasn't found the perfect beat. Aesthetically, the game is a mess.
