Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
September 20, 2010 - Excellent - Minerva's Den takes around four and a half hours to complete if one zooms straight through it, and perhaps a little longer if players go hunting for achievements. Still, at 800 MS points it's a bargain; with its gripping story, engaging new characters and fun new weapons, Minerva's Den is a product the late Andrew Ryan would most assuredly approve of.
September 8, 2010 - Good - Even if you guess what's going on, the payoff makes Minerva's Den well worth the ten bucks and the sometime filler gameplay. Because above and beyond its qualifications as DLC, it's worth the Bioshock 2 name.
September 1, 2010 - Good - Minerva's Den offers a tightly wound narrative that is easy to digest and unlike any other tale told under the sea. The name "The Thinker" will forever be cemented in mind once this game concludes, and it does so on a shocking note. For only 800 MS points, 2K Marin has delivered another welcome addition to the BioShock lore.
January 5, 2011 - Good - The BioShock franchise has explored sociopolitical themes few games dare to consider. BioShock 2: Minerva's Den infuses these themes with warmth and humanity, making you share in Porter's nostalgia for a vision of Rapture that never was.
September 9, 2010 - Good - The five or so hours it takes to escape this den of iniquity are rife with high caliber direction. It balances the new gewgaws with the series' hallmarks to deliver a fitting send-off of BioShock's under-the-sea story.
August 31, 2010 - Good - With its better encounter design, more interesting strategic options, and much better pacing, Minerva's Den, if it truly is the way 2K brings the curtain down on Rapture for the foreseeable future, closes it out with grace and style. At four to six hours for ten bucks, Minerva's Den is worth it for BioShock 2 fanatics and tourists alike.
September 6, 2010 - Good - If there's one thing I got stuck on, it's the formulaic treatment of the Little Sisters. They're protected by a tough, laser-toting Big Daddy this time, and can harvest Adam from fallen Rapture citizens up to two times, while you protect them. If you can get over that mental hump, you'll find Minerva's Den to be a very interesting and value-packed single-player expansion to BioShock 2.
September 1, 2010 - Good - The five-hour journey drags during its fetch-questy bits, but its finale - where your real goal, and purpose, become clear - is just perfect. Moving, melancholy, and even a bit hopeful, it's a true stunner; don't be surprised if it leaves you a little teary-eyed.
