Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
November 5, 2009 - Excellent - While some people might complain about being fatigued by the seemingly endless stream of similar music games, when they're tied to each other like Band Hero is tied to GH5, I see that as a positive direction for Activision's franchise. It's one of the strongest points of the Rock Band series, and is a very smart move for Hero as well.
November 6, 2009 - Excellent - If you're interested in even half the songs, I can almost guarantee you'll find at least a couple more surprisingly entertaining. And that pretty much sums up Band Hero for me: It's not a revolution for the genre, but it is a surprisingly solid, well thought-out, and just plain entertaining game.
December 2, 2009 - Good - Band Hero could have easily been called Guitar Hero 5 Part 2 and no one would have cared. It's pretty much the same game with only a few visual differences and new cosmetic elements.
November 3, 2009 - Good - It contains many of the mechanics that made Guitar Hero 5 a much-improved sequel. Although it has some of that game's quirks, it adds some charm of its own. It's almost impossible to please everyone all the time with a music game, but for the less hardcore just looking for hits, Band Hero nails all the notes.
November 4, 2009 - Good - It's hard to take Band Hero out of the context of its recent music game brethren. Band Hero is the least innovative of the bunch, but that certainly doesn't make it bad. For players who found previous releases too hard-edged for their tastes, Band Hero is exactly what they've been waiting for.
November 5, 2009 - Good - If you haven't played the latest Guitar Hero or are looking for something that all ages of players can get into, [this is] a respectable choice. However, its mostly flat song list and almost complete lack of anything significantly new may have you feeling a sense of deja vu that can't be shaken.
December 2, 2009 - Good - It's highly advisable that you check the track listing carefully before deciding to purchase this game, because it's definitely the most family-friendly Hero title to date. But at this time of the year, that's not a bad thing at all.
December 2, 2009 - Good - If you are looking for a solid entry point into the rhythm game craze or have some youngsters running around that you don't exactly want to expose to some of the more mature music in other rhythm games Band Hero is a solid choice.
November 4, 2009 - Good - Aside from new celebrities, songs, and venues, Band Hero isn't that different from Guitar Hero 5. Like Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero is a well put together, robust rhythm game, and Party Play mode is a great way to entice shy friends to join in the fun.
November 18, 2009 - Good - The bottom line is Band Hero is going to be an awesome game to those who happen to fall neatly within its target demographic. Serious Guitar Hero fans who prefer head banging, feedback, and stage diving in their rock games will want to die half-way through the game - assuming they even make it that far.
November 3, 2009 - Good - Band Hero is a good game, but it lacks any kind of spark that makes it feel unique. In the end, this is one of the examples people will point to when they talk about Activision milking the Guitar Hero franchise for all it's worth - even though this time the milk is quenching the thirst of every Taylor Swift fan out there with a plastic guitar.
December 9, 2009 - Good - [Its] certainly not for everyone and does come packed with a DLC argument hanging over its head. Band Hero will tick every box for the audience it's intended for, though.
January 4, 2010 - Good - [Band Hero is] a fine family game, but ultimately it's Guitar Hero 5: Pop Edition and not worth buying as well as, rather than instead of, its hard-rocking brother.
November 4, 2009 - Good - There's no doubt that Band Hero is fun to play, but Activision could have had so much more to show if it had evolved it better in relation to the other Hero games.
November 9, 2009 - Good - Band Hero is strikingly close to Activision's former release; it's a game that comes across more as GH with a different musical focus, rather than as a new IP in its own right. Band Hero is far from being a bad game, but somewhere along the line it seems the new franchise's focus became a little confused.
December 21, 2009 - Good - It's a solid choice for anyone looking to buy a game that the whole family can enjoy with an angst-filled teenage son. It might be a joke to hardcore gamers, but Band Hero does an admirable job of playing the right tune for its intended audience.
November 10, 2009 - Mediocre - Band Hero is a technically solid product pitched at a demographic that does presumably exist - people who don't like Guitar Hero's music, but still want to play along - but it sets a dangerous precedent. Where Guitar Hero 5 hauled the series up to a quality plateau, adding a load of features that fans of the series can really appreciate, Band Hero is nothing more or less than a reskin.
November 4, 2009 - Mediocre - Like any other rhythm game, Band Hero is entirely dependent on your musical taste and how much you're willing to spend to acquire these 65 songs. Just know that with the GH5 technology backing it up, you'll at least get a sound product on the back end. With that in mind, look at the song list, look at your wallet, and come to your own conclusion.
