Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
October 22, 2009 - Good - For those willing to sit back and savour the unhurriedness, the experience can be both enlightening and rewarding, revealing as it does truths about this world even as it paints a vivid picture of another.
October 28, 2009 - Good - Axel and Pixel isn't breaking any new ground with its adventure puzzles but it does offer a fanciful and low pressure gaming experience filled with plenty of delightful touches.
November 11, 2009 - Good - Like many point and clickers its solutions range from the forehead-slappingly obvious to the unfairly obscure. The adventure's a bit short, but a decent selection of collectibles will drag you back once you're done.
October 22, 2009 - Good - Axel & Pixel is a great example of an original title with a great sense of personality. While the asking price of 800 Microsoft Points might be a bit much for such a short-lived adventure, it's definitely a great time while it lasts.
October 14, 2009 - Good - I had a blast playing Axel & Pixel, but the thrill was short lived. It can be beaten in a day and although the arcade mini-games are worth sticking around for they're not as engrossing as the adventure.
November 9, 2009 - Good - Axel & Pixel is an enjoyable experience through the brief moments that players are able to experience. Visually, it's a wonderful addition to the Xbox Live Arcade. Though, in the long run, Axel & Pixel doesn't have enough appeal to keep the interest levels at an all-time high.
November 6, 2009 - Mediocre - Coming in at 800 Microsoft Points, Axel & Pixel is difficult to recommend. Even though it's got loads of personality and it fully embraces its own craziness, it fails to be a sturdy combination of different game genres, and is just not fun enough to justify hunting through all those pixels.
October 22, 2009 - Mediocre - If it were a 400-point trifle, you could almost forgive Axel & Pixel for all that it lacks. But for the full Xbox Live price tag of 800 points, you expect a little more than the couple of hours of diversion that this romp through dreamland has to offer.
October 14, 2009 - Mediocre - Axel & Pixel is cute, but not very original. If you really must pay to play a game that would otherwise be available for free on newgrounds.com, go ahead. But we'd rather save our money on the little artsy-fartsy games that try and actually do something new, such as Braid or Lucidity.
