The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
January 21, 2010 - Excellent - There is enough in this new installment to make it worth your time and money, despite the quick and dirty campaign mode. Playing through said campaign with a friend is definitely the way to go, but you won't be disappointed if you want to jump into the action by yourself. Army of Two: The 40th Day is dumb, goofy fun, but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered.
January 11, 2010 - Excellent - Army of Two: The 40th Day improves on its predecessor in every way. The feature-rich, action-packed gameplay - co-op and solo - is a blast, but it's the explosive presentation, that literally sees Shanghai falling to flaming pieces all around you, that steals the show and will have you watching your - and your buddy's - back.
January 12, 2010 - Good - Even though I think [the story moments] ultimately contributed to the Army of Two's inconsistent tone, which moves from "flippant" to "serious business about how messed up people can get," the morality moments are what I'll remember most about The 40th Day. Not the solid cooperative play, nor the snazzy graphics where buildings fall apart, nor even the little flaws that still annoy me at times.
January 12, 2010 - Good - There's little doubt that anyone who fell in love with the first game's slender charms will be enthused by the prospect of more of the same delivered with a higher degree of HD polish. With its A-list production still held back by B-list ambition, though, there's ultimately not enough of substance to lure players away from the multitude of other co-op gaming experiences for more than a few days.
January 12, 2010 - Good - If there's one thing you need to know about 40th Day, it's that it is an absolute blast to play. The story might be lacking, most of the new mechanics feel too "gamey," and it has one of the more questionable moments in recent gaming, but in terms of delivering adrenaline-pumping, blockbuster action on a massive scale, the game absolutely delivers.
January 21, 2010 - Good - The 40th Day is clearly a game designed for you and a living, breathing partner to get in on some action together. The game itself is mostly forgettable, but the fluttery feeling you'll get when the two of you bump virtual chests isn't.
January 14, 2010 - Good - Despite the strange morality system and the bugs, Army of Two: The 40th Day is still a quality shooter. There's more than enough excitement for your $60, and it's worth even more if you have a friend tagging along.
January 13, 2010 - Good - We have little doubt that the game will find its audience, but by and large, Army of Two: The 40th Day is a brief, lukewarm experience that will engage most players for an afternoon. And in spite of the AI improvements, it's still best played as a rented couch co-op.
January 13, 2010 - Good - With entertaining action, great visuals, surprising replay value, and the ability to play rock-paper-scissors while standing over the corpses of your enemies, The 40th Day is a fun way for shooter fans to start off 2010.
January 12, 2010 - Good - If you've gone through Spec Ops with a pal in Modern Warfare 2 and want more of the same quality co-op action, this is well worth a look. As a third-person action game it's not as polished or consistently entertaining as Uncharted 2 or Gears of War, but still a worthy and often surprising alternative.
January 12, 2010 - Good - Army of Two: The 40th Day is fun but short, and lacking enemies more substantial than guys with grenade launchers. The series definitely still has quite a bit of potential to live up to, but if you have a friend to partner up with, it's definitely worth taking a couple trips to witness the destruction of Shanghai.
January 8, 2010 - Good - A disaster movie in a game package, Army of Two: The 40th Day capitalizes on its co-op play to deliver an awesome action experience that's incredibly fun to play.
January 12, 2010 - Good - Silly, throwaway nonsense it may be, but that doesn't mean it's not any good. Sequels are a fabulous opportunity to correct the wrongs of the original, and while Army of Two won't be threatening any game of the year lists, it is leaps and bounds ahead of its not so illustrious predecessor.
January 12, 2010 - Good - The interaction between the two main characters extends beyond the trivial buddy moves from the first game and becomes an integral part of the journey. Marry that to some satisfyingly chunky gunplay and the odd spectacular, building-levelling explosion and you have an action game that is far more fun than it has any right to be.
January 22, 2010 - Good - Anyone who found themselves enjoying the original, or any pair of gamers who fancy another fairly entertaining co-op shooter to get them through the first half of 2010, will find themselves suitably smitten by EA Montreal's competent return to the franchise: it's far more than an ersatz Gears of War, but is hardly an essential purchase.
January 26, 2010 - Good - The 40th Day is just far too inexcusably frustrating to heartily recommend, but if what you're looking for is a hefty serving of disposable, bombastic fare, then this will be right up your street.
January 12, 2010 - Good - While the gameplay and level design is improved and it's a good looking game, the unsatisfying narrative, boring characters, and overly gimmicky morality system combine with forgettable multiplayer and strange mechanics decisions to deliver a sequel that succeeds more than its forebear, but fails to be more than a pretty good third person shooter during a lean time for the sub-genre.
January 15, 2010 - Good - Army of Two: The 40th Day is an all out co-op shooter that does exactly what it says on the tin. What it sets out to achieve it succeeds with style, even if these ambitions are firmly rooted in B-movie territory. Whilst this stunted ambition and some minor gameplay niggles hold it back from being truly great, this is a full throttle, adrenalin fuelled, macho-fest which is dumb, fun and full of guns.
January 13, 2010 - Good - Although the Agro system underpins the overall co-op gameplay sufficiently, the lack of imagination prevents the game from pushing forwards the co-op experience. Instead there's more satisfaction gained by the subtlety that EA Montreal has brought to the series; something we never imagined ourselves to say about the antics of Rios and Salem.
January 12, 2010 - Good - Army of Two: The 40th Day is a solid, entertaining third-person shooter, best played with a friend, but it's not quite the big advancement over the original it could have been. It's a more cohesive game, thanks to its location and more believable main characters, but the AI still disappoints at times and the new morality system misses far more than it hits.
January 25, 2010 - Good - Army of Two: The 40th Day offers a very attractive package for shooter fans, particularly those looking for an experience that is first and foremost centered around a co-op mentality. There are a few missteps along the way, including some boring levels and a not quite fully fleshed-out morality system.
January 18, 2010 - Mediocre - Things get more interesting when the game tosses moral choices your way. These moments, and not the dull firefights, are the most memorable things about The 40th Day. They stir the mind and wake players, if only briefly, from what otherwise is a banal, trigger-happy, brain-deadening experience.

January 20, 2010 - Mediocre - The main flaw of The 40th Day is that it lacks that elusive sense of symbiosis you can feel in games like Gears of War or Left 4 Dead. Army of Two still can't rank with today's elite co-op shooting experiences. Maybe it's the thin story, but The 40th Day doesn't quite feel like life or death.
January 12, 2010 - Mediocre - The guns are loud, the deaths are myriad, the graphics are fine, and everything's better in co-op. It's even got split screen co-op if you want to share your TV real estate with a local friend. Just remember that the key to Army of Two is keeping at bay the nagging sensation that you might as well be playing Resident Evil 5 or Gears of War 2.
January 12, 2010 - Mediocre - With so many great co-op experiences available to gamers, it's tough to recommend The 40th Day. Lacking a cohesive story, solid controls, key multiplayer features, and polish, this sequel fails to close the gap of mediocrity running through its core game design.
January 12, 2010 - Mediocre - Extraction is essentially a slightly modified take on Gears of War 2's Horde mode and Halo 3: ODST's Firefight mode, and while it didn't seem mind-blowingly original, it'd probably be pretty exciting on higher levels with some close friends. But as a whole, while The 40th Day has its moments, it just isn't consistent enough to keep my attention.
January 12, 2010 - Mediocre - The 40th Day can't pull itself from the realm of mediocrity it seems so entrenched in, and I'm not sure any amount of fist-bumping, guns-blazing teamwork can change that.
January 15, 2010 - Mediocre - The 40th Day has a couple of technical glitches, and the 360 version of the game locked up on me a couple of times. But for the most part, it's a technically competent shooter with co-operative play. For some, that's plenty. But if you're more discerning about your shooters, you'll probably get bored of this one before you've seen the end credits.
January 23, 2010 - Mediocre - From the start to the anti-climactic finish, Army of Two: The 40th Day limps along using its history and prebuilt fanbase as a crutch. It's by no means a bad game, but saying that it leaps ahead of its predecessor in quality would be a lie. It's a bit of fun in co-op and, while it lasts, it's a competent shooter, but nothing more.
January 12, 2010 - Mediocre - Compared to its predecessor, Army of Two: The 40th Day didn't evolve where it mattered most. The sequel failed to expand on some clever cooperative mechanics, and the story was a complete snooze.
