Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 23, 2010 - Good - Ultimately, if you don't like either film franchises that this game is based around, there's not going to be much for you to enjoy in AvP. For the fans that AvP was very obviously made for, however, the high production values, attention to the universe's detail and generally smooth gameplay make it a worthy addition to the franchise.
February 17, 2010 - Good - Had Rebellion tweaked the A.I., added much-needed extras and fleshed out each character's story, this could have been the greatest AVP of all time. For now, we'll have to settle for it being superior to the lackluster films. Considering their poor quality, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
February 17, 2010 - Good - We'd argue that we wouldn't want it any other way when it comes to Aliens vs Predator. It's deliriously gory, unwaveringly confident and spectacular fun. And, at the very least, it's far better than the films.
February 18, 2010 - Good - As a standalone single-player adventure, Aliens vs. Predator hits a shaky equilibrium with carefully planted franchise winks and underwhelming set pieces. But for someone with an inclination for diverse experiences, interesting multiplayer modes, or even the AvP franchise as a whole, the game casts a pretty wide net of appeal.
February 16, 2010 - Good - If your primary experience of gaming took place on the Wii, you'll find it impossibly frustrating. On the other hand, if you've rinsed everything from Modern Warfare 2 and are seeking a new challenge worthy of your skills, it has come at just the right time.
February 16, 2010 - Good - Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It's by no means a bad game and will almost certainly please fans more so than either movie effort, but when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.
February 19, 2010 - Good - The excitement of being in these worlds is powerful enough to override the vanilla FPS nature of marine play or the boring nature of the Predator, but the world has changed since 1999, and as such Rebellion needs to move with it in whatever they do next.
February 17, 2010 - Good - A few more maps, a few more multiplayer modes, a few more unique areas in the campaign, and a few more fear-inducing moments would've gone a long way toward making Aliens vs. Predator set off gamers' motion trackers. Instead, it registers as simply a medium blip on the radar - a second-shelf shooter that falls just short of fulfilling the incredible potential of its license.
February 17, 2010 - Good - We can't help but wonder if the traditional structure should have been abandoned for a lengthier stint as the Marine. Nevertheless, AvP is well worth your time and, with the unique online offering as well, there's plenty to get your teeth, claws and wristblades into.
February 22, 2010 - Good - Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced. Fans of the movies will certainly find more to love in AvP than those without a knowledge of its celluloid counterparts, who might find the whole thing a little less palatable in comparison to the many superior FPSes currently available.
February 18, 2010 - Good - A more fleshed out marine campaign and more maps for the survival multiplayer game type would have made for an altogether better experience, but what Rebellion has delivered is still worth taking a look at. This isn't the perfect Aliens or Predator video game, but it does a lot right.
March 1, 2010 - Good - If you seek a multiplayer experience that oozes variety, this will be a prime gaming candidate for you. Fans of the iconic sci-fi creatures will be pleased to see a good game in this series once again, while FPS action fans will also find themselves enjoying this one, despite the few hiccups it may have.
March 1, 2010 - Mediocre - The always-terrific Lance Henriksen is on hand to put a human face on-and lend some soul to-this otherwise soulless experience. Yet in the end, his character turns out to be just as hollow as the videogame he's starring in.
February 19, 2010 - Mediocre - Scrappy where it needed to be polished, clumsy where it needed to be nimble, the game wears its iconic characters as a shield, happy to serve up scripted shocks but offering nothing that might actually surprise.
February 22, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens vs. Predator certainly has much in common with the movies, but possibly isn't quite the answer that fans of the series were wanting in the way of video game fulfilment. Its a good effort no doubt, but its not quite there yet. Maybe the next iteration.
February 22, 2010 - Mediocre - As a shooter fan and someone who watched all eight films that make up the Alien, Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator series, I had high hopes for the title, but it fails to do both the genre and the franchise justice.
February 15, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens vs. Predator is sometimes enjoyable but never escapes an overwhelming sense of carelessness, so while it may remind you of the good old days, it fails to recapture them.
February 16, 2010 - Mediocre - If this new AvP were like a grapefruit, and you were like the Dole Fruit Company, you would probably buy it only for use in juicing, not to be eaten on its own, as it just doesn't have enough meat. And by "buy it only for use in juicing" I mean you probably wouldn't buy it at all, because it isn't very good.
February 26, 2010 - Mediocre - Even when ignoring the Alien's clunky controls, the unnecessary bloodletting, and the cliche-cluttered narrative, it remains an inescapable truth that the passable Marine missions really should have been effortlessly overshadowed by Alien and Predator campaigns that hold all the required invention and originality but fail to impress due to a lack of balance, poor design decisions and some shoddy execution.
February 16, 2010 - Mediocre - A failure to tread any new ground thematically or even current ground mechanically dooms Aliens vs. Predator to a place in the collections of only the most die-hard fans of the universe, who will play through the game once and relegate it to the same shelf of shame occupied by their AVP Requiem DVDs.
March 15, 2010 - Mediocre - Rebellion set out to give the AvP franchise an HD overhaul. What it ended up with is a game that FPS fans may certainly appreciate, even if they would be forgiven for feeling like they're playing a decade-old game with a new lick of paint.
February 21, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens vs Predator occasionally offers brief moments of entertainment, but it's ultimately let down by an unimaginative approach to the single-player mode that never quite manages to match the terror, suspense and brilliance of the original movies.
February 18, 2010 - Mediocre - Fans of the Aliens vs. Predator series should get some brief enjoyment from this latest gaming iteration, but the generic combat might be enough to scare most video game players away.
February 17, 2010 - Poor - It's rote and uninspired, a desultory thoughtless collage of bits and pieces surgically removed from the movies and dropped lifelessly into a dated engine. We're light years from the calculated, monster mash-up the series used to promise.
February 18, 2010 - Poor - While the game isn't a total loss, there's just not enough here to make the game recommendable. As it is now, AvP is mostly a visually updated version of an eleven year-old game, and that's not what fans of the franchises or first-person shooters deserve.
February 16, 2010 - Poor - Rebellion's 1999 PC release, Aliens vs. Predator, was well received, but this update captures none of that game's unique spark. Instead we have a title trying to live off the fumes of two dormant franchises.
February 19, 2010 - Poor - The last time I played a game in this series was when it came out for the Jaguar. Sadly, it seems not much has changed in the last decade and a half. As it stands now, you'd probably have more fun being on To Catch a Predator than playing Aliens Vs. Predator.
February 18, 2010 - Poor - There's no one solid aspect of [Aliens vs. Predator] to make up for the other, busted-up parts. You're left with the impression that the single-player was an afterthought and that multiplayer was the focus. But even the multiplayer is saddled with enough flaws to make this game missable.
