Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
July 23, 2010 - Excellent - As a free download, The Signal is certainly a treat. The story is as warped as ever with taught writing and a style that never becomes too self-serious. Even if Alan Wake didn't thrill you on your first playthrough I still recommend giving this add-on a try.

July 23, 2010 - Excellent - Though the story doesn't advance and isn't explained too much further, it's still one of the better pieces of DLC I've played to date. I definitely recommend picking it up if you enjoyed the game, or if you're in the mood for a bit more of a twisted ride.
July 27, 2010 - Good - Although the story in The Signal isn't nearly as impactful nor as focused as what was found in the original game, the rest of this episode lives up to what came before it. The directionless story keeps The Signal from being a must-play for Alan Wake fans clamoring for closure, but this is still an enjoyable add-on with many intense moments.
July 28, 2010 - Good - Expect to get through [The Signal] in as much time as it took you to play through a chapter of the original game. You might get the impression that Remedy is stringing you along what feels like a never-ending nightmare, but in this case, it's a trip worth taking.
July 23, 2010 - Good - Are these 90 minutes worth $7? I'm going to say "yes," if only because Alan Wake's skewed atmosphere and briskly paced story -- the stuff that drew you to it in the first place -- extend into the DLC. The difficulty isn't as tightly controlled, but once the licensed song signals the end, you'll be eager to see what's next on the [horizon].
August 6, 2010 - Good - The DLC lasts around two hours, but with ten alarm clocks to find along the way, as well as cardboard standees of certain characters to find - you could probably extend that to three or four. The fact that it's free makes it well worth a play, just don't go expecting any plot revelations or answers to the game's more fundamental questions.
July 26, 2010 - Mediocre - Amid its shortcomings, The Signal still has the formidable assets of its parent game: adult themes and a gorgeous visual style. So I'd rather play an erratic instalment of Alan Wake than a highly polished cover-shooter clone, because even when it fails, the former gives me something to think about in the ensuing days. Put another way, The Signal gets better the more I don't play it.
August 13, 2010 - Mediocre - For the most part, [Alan's] still just stepping out of the way of roadworkers, woodcutters and other assorted Village People, while that mysterious diving suit guy still doesn't make his identity known. Oh well, at least the DLC's free if you bought the game brand new, though if you've not traded it in by now we'd be genuinely shocked.
July 28, 2010 - Mediocre - [The Signal is] one of [Alan Wake's] less satisfying episodes; aside from a couple of tweaks and some new plot details, all of the aspects which make it worth buying were present and correct in the main game.
