Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
April 20, 2010 - Excellent - After Burner has always been a single-player affair, and an '80s twitch game franchise, at that. To see it revived with gorgeous graphics, minimal gameplay gimmicks, and on a download platform is a prime example of how these kinds of games should be done. Play and enjoy After Burner Climax for what it is: a thrill ride.
April 20, 2010 - Good - The core systems tap into ancient, compelling arcade wells - and for those who take the time to master the tall but relatively short learning curve, Climax offers enough thrills and challenge to justify its price tag of 800 Microsoft Points.
April 21, 2010 - Good - If you're looking for a pure arcade-style I-need-to-be-the-high-scorer experience then Climax is an easy pick. It's not as deep or nuanced as some of the other downloadable games out there, but sometimes that isn't what you need, either.
April 20, 2010 - Good - After Burner Climax is what it is, and wears its dunderheaded olden days sensibilities firmly and happily on its sleeve. You'll either appreciate this or you won't, but we urge you to give it a go.
April 21, 2010 - Good - Climax's brand of dogfighting is certainly straightforward and repetitive, but it's also ludicrously fast-paced and highly addictive. Hardcore flyboys might sneer, but most others will have a hard time tearing their eyes from the screen.
April 20, 2010 - Good - While Afterburner does include unlockable game changing extras and a Score Attack option, for thrills-a-second gameplay we fear the enjoyment will burn out rather swiftly. Yet given it's two quid a pop in the arcades, the just-under seven quid XBLA version comes out trumps.
April 20, 2010 - Good - Afterburner Climax is a great, and reasonably priced way to play the arcade game in the comfort of your own home, but it's a remarkably simple game that will leave some people wanting a lot more. There's skill required to earn really high scores, but the gameplay simply doesn't have the depth required to be called a classic.
July 1, 2010 - Good - After Burner Climax sets out to be exactly what people expected it to be - a port of an arcade game - and nothing more. It can be beaten in a short time, but the degree of difficulty, combined with lack of continue credits, makes the game feel like a real challenge, especially when you factor in the alternate endings and bonus missions.
April 26, 2010 - Mediocre - A few players may find enjoyment in honing their enemy-targeting, missile-dodging skills and climbing the leaderboards of the Score Attack mode, but most will find that the immediate allure Climax offers wears off rather quickly.
April 23, 2010 - Mediocre - We'd liked to have seen more substance here to go with the new style and, as such, can't quite recommend it for the somewhat steep price, unless you really, really love After Burner.
