Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 20, 2012 - Good - Brush aside the SHARE THIS! buttons, and you will find that the makers of Road Trip have deviously concealed a pretty good kart-racing game amid the Facebook Jr. camouflage.
February 13, 2012 - Good - ModNation can't touch Nintendo's classic series - but then what can? Think of it instead as Mario Kart for Speed Demons and things become much clearer: this big, inventive racing game might not be the best racing game on the market - but it's the best on PS Vita.
February 13, 2012 - Good - This isn't the most charismatic racing series around, perhaps, but Road Trip is a surprisingly enjoyable instalment nonetheless. It's colourful, cheerful and a decent showcase for Sony's brand new hardware.
February 17, 2012 - Good - Road Trip offers a compelling kart game wrapped in a UGC dream, where the least creative player and the most can both create something satisfying and shareable.
February 13, 2012 - Good - I love the racing here and I love the variety and detail of each track, but when we look back at ModNation Racers: Road Trip, I think it's going to be clear we were dealing with a launch title. [...] If you're looking for a bright and colorful kart racer with good mechanics, ModNation Racers: Road Trip fits the bill, but it doesn't excel anywhere else.
February 22, 2012 - Mediocre - Given the lack of multiplayer, and the weak single-player, ModNation Racers: Road Trip is a huge missed opportunity for the casual fan, but the mod-tools are strong enough to appeal to the already converted fan of the franchise.
February 13, 2012 - Mediocre - ModNation Racers remains a bastion for creativity, and I can only hope its focus on user-made content influences other kart racers and the racing genre as a whole. Road Trip's new touchscreen controls further refine content creation, but they aren't a game changer. Unfortunately, the lack of online multiplayer is.
February 15, 2012 - Mediocre - For every smile it elicits, there's a grimace to match it. For every joyous drift and creative breakthrough, there's a frustrating detail that flings you back toward earth. If you're keen on the series, you should consider tinkering with Road Trip. It's too bad that its engine doesn't purr as rhythmically as it should.
February 15, 2012 - Mediocre - Road Trip has its share of both personality and quirkiness, cleaving close to kart racer standards while overextending those very same tropes. With so much emphasis on sharing, the fact that there's only local multiplayer is frankly puzzling. More time should have been spent on what matters instead of fun gimmicks to promote hardware functionality.
February 13, 2012 - Mediocre - ModNation Racers on the Vita is a boring, unfair, and wholly unnecessary release that manages to be worse than its previous handheld outing, despite the advance in technology over the PSP.
February 13, 2012 - Mediocre - While Sony's Vita launch title doesn't have that special something that makes people love Nintendo's kart racer, aside from a few large missteps Road Trip generally does most things well. This is a typical launch title in many ways - by no means as good as it could have been, but a solid effort no doubt developed under the strictest of time restraints.
February 16, 2012 - Poor - There just isn't a strong enough core to hold up the sometimes inventive creations. On top of that, the Vita version suffers from some laggy, buggy menus that indicate a rushed port. Even those obsessed with creating racing game tracks on the go are still probably better off sticking with the PS3 version.
February 13, 2012 - Poor - By far the most blatantly rushed cash-in attempt of all the PS Vita launch titles, ModNation Racers: Road Trip is to be avoided at all costs. With horrid visuals, dawdling menus, and threadbare features, this lazy piece of software insults the system it is supposed to help showcase.
February 13, 2012 - Poor - ModNation Racers had a pretty good debut on the PS3, but the series has been on a downward trajectory since. Sadly, ModNation Racers: Roadtrip only continues that trend. It's a complete misfire, and no amount of goofy skins or nifty track editors can make up for the seriously busted fundamentals.
