Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 14, 2012 - Excellent - The way I see it, everyone already loves Lumines, so this review serves no one, especially when you consider that Electronic Symphony is the best one yet with its gorgeous high-resolution visuals, rocking soundtrack, new gameplay mechanics, and awesome connectivity features. No Vita should be sold without a copy of this game.
February 14, 2012 - Excellent - With Lumines: Electronic Symphony, the series grows and expands in ways that render prior games as more spin-offs than true sequels. It reinvents itself for a new medium and showcases Sony's new handheld, just as its predecessor managed in 2005. Mark our words: you will remember why you loved this game so much.
February 13, 2012 - Excellent - Load times could be a bit shorter and I wouldn't mind seeing the price come down, but Lumines: Electronic Symphony is amazing. It's the simple puzzle game we've known for a while coupled with new mechanics like the shuffle block and the Vita's connectivity. It's a fun, addictive title that I won't stop playing anytime soon.
February 14, 2012 - Excellent - The bombardment of musical and visual stimuli actually helped me focus on the game by forcing me to ignore everything else. I very quickly fell into a "flow" state. I won't go so far as to use the cliche of calling it "hypnotic," but I will say Lumines makes you care less about what's going on in the outside world.
March 9, 2012 - Excellent - Lumines is a phenomenally clever game polished to a new level of perfection by the masters at Q Entertainment. If you like puzzle games, you simply need to get this game. I don't care if you've got other stuff to do, none of it will be as thrilling as filling your life with Lumines.
February 27, 2012 - Excellent - The series has had a handful of updates since the original, but Electronic Symphony rules them all. It's not because of any new features, but because its carefully selected track listing and elegant visual style best evokes the pure euphoria that comes from the unlikely combination of puzzle-solving at a rave.
February 14, 2012 - Good - It's a sequel that doesn't have to reinvent the wheel or try to be too different and deserves major props for taking electronic music even further by adding many notable contributors to the soundtrack. While the lack of online multiplayer stings, this puzzler continues to be something special if you're willing to give it a chance.
February 20, 2012 - Good - Electronic Symphony is more or less the same Lumines that became a must-play hit for owners of the original PSP; the old game has been updated with new tracks and an even more dazzling look.
February 16, 2012 - Good - While the game itself isn't significantly different from any of the existing Lumines games you've played the high-resolution graphics and improved presentation here make it worth shelling out the additional money.
April 15, 2012 - Good - This is still Lumines, just at a doubled screen resolution and with a different, but not necessarily better, integration of the game with the music. It's certainly the best Lumines since the first, but I can't help but be disappointed that one of the PSP's most iconic games is merely good, but not great, on Sony's newest portable.
February 21, 2012 - Good - Lumines: Electronic Symphony is a pretty attractive day one purchase for the PS Vita. It's fearsomely addictive, and manages to be both soothing and psychedelic, which is no mean feat. [...] It may not be the most forward-looking of games - it's just tarted-up Tetris, after all. But if you play it, you'll be surprised by its hidden depths.
March 5, 2012 - Good - With Tetsuya Mizuguchi's often bland musical experimentation replaced with some of electronica's finest moments, Electronic Symphony breathes new life into a series that had previously appeared stagnant.
March 2, 2012 - Good - It offers warm familiarity, with a safe selection of modes and a reassuringly lovely pile of new skins, alongside tiny, precision bursts of innovation like the shuffle block. It's another incremental improvement - but, if you ask me, this has always been a game that Sony's handheld needs if it's to feel complete.
February 14, 2012 - Good - Even wrapped in some new features and an excellent soundtrack, it's just more Lumines. This musical puzzler is a solid choice for new Vita owners, but it isn't a must-have title in the larger gaming landscape.
February 15, 2012 - Good - While Electronic Symphony is a tad expensive for the limited content "on-disc," you're getting the same solid music-fueled experience you've come to expect with some exclusive new bells and whistles.
February 21, 2012 - Good - The asking price of $39.99 might seem steep, but months from now when you're looking to enjoy 30 seconds or multiple hours at a time with your Vita, Lumines: Electronic Symphony will still have you covered.
February 17, 2012 - Good - Just like the Vita itself, Lumines Electronic Symphony is slick and at times irresistible, and well worth experiencing for yourself. Still, we can't help but feel that the $40 price is a tad steep for what it offers. Unless you absolutely can't wait to participate in this carnival of light, it's probably wise to wait until the price settles a bit.
February 16, 2012 - Good - The quality of the music and skin design should be enough to squash any doubts created by a price disparity, [...] so if you're a Vita owner who likes a good puzzle game, bring the Electronic Symphony into your life as soon as you're able.
February 24, 2012 - Good - Full price puzzle games of this sort are scoffed at what with consumer expectations and the genre's prevalence on download formats. However, like it was when it launched on PSP, Lumines is quite possibly the pick of the Vita's launch titles and quite definitely the one with most staying power.
February 20, 2012 - Good - It's the sexiest puzzle game on the sexiest handheld. Any disappointment that it doesn't push the Vita's new features are nicely countered by how good it looks on that gorgeous screen. Still worryingly addictive too.

February 21, 2012 - Good - Lumines Electronic Symphony is the best version of the classic puzzler to date, packing some great music and some interesting new twists for both newcomers and experienced players alike.
February 22, 2012 - Good - While it's clear Q Entertainment perfected the game's formula on their very first try, this iteration of the neon-lit puzzler is so charming and elegantly formed you'd be a fool to say no.
