Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 20, 2012 - Excellent - One wrong swerve or acceleration, however slight, sends you flying across a barren field. Immediately afterward, your partner radios that he's ready to be picked up; the bomb is in place. You detonate it as he begs for his life. Both of these moments speak to the richness of Twisted Metal, which in its first PlayStation 3 outing, packs little surprises around every sharp turn and blazing ice-cream truck.
February 14, 2012 - Excellent - Like its predecessor from more than 15 years ago, Twisted Metal celebrates an eccentric kind of action that shoves fun down the collective throat of the gaming masses. It includes an enjoyable, challenging single-player campaign and incredible multiplayer support for both on and offline. Twisted Metal only falters when it comes to its storytelling and an occasionally stubborn lock-on system.
February 16, 2012 - Good - In the specific arenas where everything just clicks, Twisted Metal proves that it can still reign supreme over the genre it helped mold throughout the past few generations. It still retains the same impeccable blend of arcade fun and split-second strategy that makes up the series' winning concoction.
March 13, 2012 - Good - Even just the time and energy spent on hauling this to the current generation points to the fact that we'll probably never see it happen again. Fan service absolutely takes priority over genuinely fresh ideas, but even if this is the last of dying breed, it's a worthy farewell.
February 14, 2012 - Good - For all its shortcomings and lack of depth, [...] there really is no other car combat game that has the goods quite like Twisted Metal. It's a solid entry in a series that's difficult to hate, and hardcore destruction fans would do well to pick it up.
March 6, 2012 - Good - Take the time to get to grips with its minutiae and the combat is extraordinarily complex and balanced. Twisted Metal may do everything in its power to turn you off, but those who put in the effort will find it transforms from a heap of junk into scrap art.
February 14, 2012 - Good - When Twisted Metal embraces the series traditions, it delivers the best action ever seen in the franchise. When it departs from convention, however, it becomes a hit or miss affair. Whether or not vehicular combat can strike a chord with gamers in 2012 the way it did in 1995 remains to be seen, but Twisted Metal is a blast when it's firing on all cylinders.
February 15, 2012 - Good - This brand of vehicular combat is every bit as thrilling today as it ever was, and you may be left wondering why it stayed away for so long. But what really matters is that it's back now, and it is great; Calypso hasn't forgotten how to throw one hell of a competition.
February 14, 2012 - Good - While its character roster is smaller than previous games, and its multiplayer seems disappointingly basic next to its single-player campaign, Twisted Metal is nevertheless a compellingly badass game filled with fun things to discover and unlock. This isn't a perfect Twisted Metal, but as comebacks go, it's pretty strong.
March 14, 2012 - Good - Even if it weren't for the frequent network errors and connection drops, it's frustrating to see that lessons taught by modern online games have been ignored, and that there are some serious balancing issues. Disappointing after such a long wait then, even if Twisted Metal is still immensely good fun at its core.
February 14, 2012 - Good - Like an old muscle car, Twisted Metal can be a bit rough around the edges, but once you get the engine warmed up, you can get a lot out of it. The more you invest, the more it gives, providing a fulfilling sense of mayhem whether you're playing online or with friends at home.
March 8, 2012 - Good - It's pretty much Twisted Metal as we know it - albeit with added complexity. The focus is still very much on providing a constant stream of action and shying away from anything that doesn't present an image of outlandish carnage and over-the-top stylisation.
February 14, 2012 - Good - The constant struggle of trying to take out enemies and keep your own rig in check is as entertaining today as it was when it was first introduced back in the mid '90s. I just wish there wasn't so much muck to wade through before I got to Twisted Metal's gooey, rocket-blasted center.
March 19, 2012 - Good - The developers have done a marvelous job in bringing an excellent multiplayer experience to the PS3, and we are definitely pleased to see that the Twisted Metal series is alive and kicking.
February 21, 2012 - Good - It was a probably a good idea to update Twisted Metal for the PS3, and the combat and ambience is intact, but there's nothing here to push the medium beyond the 1990s era that spawned the original.
March 23, 2012 - Mediocre - With the lack of content in there, and indications from Sir David of Jaffe that there will be no DLC, the decision to charge full price for Twisted Metal is an odd one. The tacked-on campaign really doesn't add much, the game ain't pretty, and it's hard not to feel that the multiplayer element might have been better released as standalone, lower-priced downloadable title.
March 23, 2012 - Mediocre - You'll find a number of technical issues plaguing the game, from scenery clipping to inconsistent collision and some hideously low resolution textures. But the game's relentless dedication to giving you violent bangs for your bucks goes some way to compensating for them. Because Twisted Metal at its best delivers exactly what it sets out to: a messy, manic and tasteless treat.
February 14, 2012 - Mediocre - While the single-player game is weak, the multiplayer is mostly fun and creative. It's disappointing that after such a long wait, the game didn't evolve more, but fans of the original are certain to enjoy this blast from the past.
February 14, 2012 - Mediocre - Jaffe has never been one to mince words, so I'll extend the same courtesy: I don't condone secondhand sales, but I can't imagine someone paying full price for Twisted Metal and feeling like he got his money's worth.
February 21, 2012 - Mediocre - There's a fun multiplayer game in there but it's buried underneath a disappointing single-player campaign, awkward controls and a steep learning curve. The Twisted Metal name can only carry it so far and unfortunately, it feels like a relic compared to fresher takes on multiplayer mayhem.
February 16, 2012 - Mediocre - There's nothing else like Twisted Metal and when it finally works right, assuming anyone is still playing, it will be exactly the sort of unique online experience that deserves an audience. Because we can only keep playing Call of Duty for so long.
March 19, 2012 - Mediocre - If you're a fan of the series, you'll undoubtedly find some enjoyment, but for everyone else Sweettooth's adventure is pointless. Basic mistakes and the willingness to punish players at every given opportunity makes this a disappointing and forgettable product.
February 15, 2012 - Mediocre - Outside of multiplayer, the reincarnation of Twisted Metal doesn't push the series forward in a significant way. Unless you're a longtime fan of the franchise, it might not be worth hopping behind the wheel.
