Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 10, 2012 - Good - If Virtua Tennis is Nadal - bright, consistent, unafraid to work up a sweat - and Top Spin has the measured elegance of a Federer, Grand Slam Tennis is every bit the Andy Murray of tennis games: flashes of brilliance, prone to a few too many errors, but shows definite champion potential.
February 8, 2012 - Good - While it's not a perfect product, EA knows how to make deep, full-featured sports games with high production values. In Grand Slam Tennis 2, developer EA Canada applies some of the lessons learned from the company's other franchises to create a game that excels in many areas while coming up short in a few important ones.
February 21, 2012 - Good - If you're looking for terrific multiplayer, Grand Slam is potentially your ideal tennis game. With innovative controls, all four major event locations and surface types, a deep character creator, and decent selection of top players, it features a unique brand of options for you to head online and engage in epic tennis battles.
February 10, 2012 - Good - There's room for improvement - chiefly in the variety of game modes, the selection of commentary snippets and the pace of the career mode - but for now, Grand Slam Tennis 2 is the best game of tennis that video games have to offer.
February 10, 2012 - Good - Virtua Tennis is more accessible and probably the better multiplayer game, but for the Move functions and licensing this is a worthwhile purchase for those wanting to scratch that tennis itch.
February 16, 2012 - Good - There is no doubt that EA produce a great sports game. They put a lot of effort into making their games as realistic as possible, with all the nuance and detail that makes you feel like you are right there playing the sport. No surprise, then, that Grand Slam Tennis 2 is a very accurate and playable Tennis simulation with only a few compromises to ensure playability.
February 8, 2012 - Mediocre - The career mode lacks depth and fails to hold your interest for very long. Still, if EA Canada plans to make another tennis game in the next two to three years, as is the trend, there is potential for this franchise to have a long shelf life.
February 22, 2012 - Mediocre - It's damn hard to talk about video game tennis without bringing up Virtua Tennis, particularly when a game, like Grand Slam Tennis 2, hems so close to that original arcade formula. It's a facsimile that's executed well enough; there just aren't any good reasons to recommend Grand Slam Tennis 2 over the games that it cribs from.
February 10, 2012 - Mediocre - It's important to remember that there's still a enjoyable bit of bat-and-ball in Grand Slam Tennis 2, but it's been done so much better elsewhere so many times that it's almost impossible to recommend. It has neither the depth of Top Spin nor the excitement of Virtua Tennis, and is bizarrely inferior to its predecessor in almost every way.
