Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - Freestyle Games has pulled off an impressive trick, crafting a game that holds true to its sister franchise while at the same time putting a unique spin on both the gameplay and the music. With so much of the classic rock catalog depleted, this genre needs to look to new and creative ways to keep the experience fresh. DJ Hero is a great first step.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - Guitar Hero usually receives most of the headlines, but DJ Hero is without question Activision's coolest rhythm game. The turntable has its drawbacks, but that soundtrack will give you a new appreciation for music and perhaps satisfy your DJ fantasy. Just don't pass this off as another game with a useless peripheral.
October 27, 2009 - Excellent - In all it's a great package, and even if you're only vaguely into the kind of music on offer, you'll get weeks of fun out of it. DJ Hero does represent a big leap of faith - that £90/$120 price tag is daunting - but once you actually play it, you'll get it, and there'll be no turning back.
November 11, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is a great game, and a fantastic entry to the music game genre. It's as original and intuitive as they come, offering proof that innovation in the genre may be down, but not out. If you are at all a fan of electronic music or just curious at how DJ's work, then definitely check out DJ Hero.
October 26, 2009 - Excellent - A little headroom has been left for improvement with a sequel, particularly in the head-to-head battles and the way leaderboards display scores. But DJ Hero is already the most exciting music game around and is guaranteed to get the party started.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - We had our initial reservations about DJ Hero, but the final product lays them all to rest. This is proof that there's life in the rhythm-action genre yet beyond drums, guitars and mics.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is an exciting and brilliantly realised package, and while it may not offer the fantastic co-op experience of some of its contemporaries, its slick gameplay and fantastic presentation make it a must-have title in an overcrowded genre.
October 30, 2009 - Excellent - DJ Hero is possibly the best rhythm action game I have ever played. It may still be finding its feet in the world, and it certainly has room to improve, but for a first effort it's managed to do almost everything right.
November 28, 2009 - Excellent - This title will appeal to both casual and core gamers alike, with a beginner's mode even toddler children can play fairly well and enjoy. On the other end of the spectrum, the higher difficulty levels are enough to drive you insane - or keep you regularly playing DJ Hero for a couple of years.
October 28, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero attempts to mold turntablism into a mainstream medium. It succeeds, but stumbles along the way. I didn't experience the sensation of scratching and mixing, until I turned it up to Expert difficulty. DJ Hero's debut is noteworthy, but there's much work to be done for the follow-up.
October 30, 2009 - Good - Weak multiplayer and control issues prevent it from being the instant classic Guitar Hero was four year ago, but FreeStyleGames has nevertheless created a slick and enormously enjoyable music game that deserves to succeed and evolve.
October 27, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero is a good game, one that will undoubtedly find a hardcore audience that appreciates it, flaws and all, and an interesting step forward for music games.
October 30, 2009 - Good - There's plenty of room for improvement, since there isn't much in the way of creative ability or battle variation, but the diverse track picks and simple control scheme help put together a game that will definitely keep the crowd hyped.
November 4, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero will only give you a glimpse into the realities of mixing and scratching, with some of the coolest mash-ups I've ever heard to entertain along the way. For someone like me, who would rather get down with a set of tables than a six-string, DJ Hero is nearly a perfect medium for my fantasies of scratch-stardom.
November 5, 2009 - Good - Despite the sizable cost, DJ Hero is an enticing purchase. It captures the thrill of spinning together hot songs to make an electrifying mix, and it's one show that fans of rhythm games will not want to miss.
October 27, 2009 - Good - It's a bit barebones, and the turntable controller feels like it could have been better in a couple of spots. But as the start of something new, DJ Hero provides a very strong foundation that things like additional downloadable content or full-fledged sequels could really build on.
October 30, 2009 - Good - DJ Hero may not be a game an entire family will be clamoring to play, but it is certainly capable of entertaining an entire room full of people even though only one person, or no one, is playing. Like its guitar-driven ancestors it belongs firmly in the living room, albeit a noisy one.
November 16, 2009 - Good - I've played it for the last week on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, and I can say without a doubt that like Guitar Hero, it has an appeal to it that cannot be denied. Gameplay is there, the soundtrack is there, and the pieces fall together well.
