Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
July 16, 2010 - Excellent - With the exception of food, water and, if necessary, important medications, I can't think of anything more worthy of spending $15 on this week. This is a high point for comedy in games, built on a solid foundation of time-tested gameplay that everyone should experience.
July 23, 2010 - Excellent - There hasn't been a funnier, more singularly creative videogame since Brütal Legend. And where Double Fine disappointed some with odd game design choices, DeathSpank does nothing but please.
July 13, 2010 - Good - Purely as an action-RPG, it's a competent game with a few significant flaws in the name of simplicity/accessibility, but as an experience, it shines with humor and wit all over, and makes me hopeful for an improved sequel.
July 20, 2010 - Good - DeathSpank does have funny moments, and it's a game that's aimed squarely at players who love to play with new weapons while decking their character out in the best armor possible, but it may not appeal to anyone else.
August 1, 2010 - Good - It's a solid title with genuine humor that moves quickly and doesn't wear out its welcome. You're not missing too much if you give it a pass, but it's one of the better games of the summer and is well worth the budget-friendly price of admission. [Issue #7, p.44]
July 13, 2010 - Good - Deathspank doesn't only present a host of entertaining characters, but innovative mechanics that accommodate both new recruits and seasoned veterans in their quest to dispense justice and vanquish evil. While not every aspect may be perfect, this reviewer hopes that this will be the start of a beautiful franchise.
July 28, 2010 - Good - Brief difficulty spikes, like annoying one-hit kills, rained on my parade from time to time, but I thoroughly enjoyed its overall simplicity. It's an ace introduction to a genre that isn't well-represented on consoles, and it's funny and engaging enough to capture you for hours at a time.
July 15, 2010 - Good - The stripped cooperative play adds little to the quest, and you don't have much say in how your character levels up. But DeathSpank is so charming and endearing that it's easy to lose hours to this quest trying to obtain another ancient artifact.
July 13, 2010 - Good - If you've played any Diablo-style RPG and any Monkey Island-style adventure and enjoyed them, you know you'll like DeathSpank. It's a hilarious and seamless combination of the two genres more than worthy of your 15 bucks and a couple weekends of your time.
August 2, 2010 - Good - DeathSpank is very much a straight-up game which doesn't bother inventing surprising new game mechanics, but keeps you amused with its quirky humour and proves surprisingly addictive thanks to simple but all-action gameplay.
July 13, 2010 - Good - Questing can turn into a noticeable chore, and I would have gladly substituted some of the "go fetch" missions in favor of some more brainteasers. Still, DeathSpank is a fun adventure worth exploring.
July 22, 2010 - Good - The humour won't sit with everyone and the nature of the genre means it features high difficulty spikes and monotonous grinding, but if you're looking for something a little different you could do a lot worse.
July 22, 2010 - Good - If quantity is favored over quality, this isn't the ideal game. Hothead Studios put a lot of love into this title, and every bit of it shows. Even though the experience is over quickly and the quests might become a bit repetitive, the overall experience of DeathSpank is undoubtedly positive.
July 26, 2010 - Good - Occasionally, you'll be reminded that, as funny as it is, the gameplay of Deathspank is nothing special, and if you stripped away the laughs, it would be a pretty average experience. If Ron Gilbert and company come up with some innovative gameplay to accompany the amazing writing, then this franchise will quickly become one of the greatest of this console generation.
July 13, 2010 - Mediocre - If you like your loot-'em-ups, and you're looking for something humorous and a bit different, this is clearly the game for you. Just don't expect it to sparkle in the way which many, myself included, hoped that it would.
July 21, 2010 - Mediocre - Even without an abundance of the "loot lust" that usually drives action-RPGs, DeathSpank has a hook that makes you want to keep playing it. But that alone doesn't make it a fantastic game. Its moments of brilliance are usually directly offset by its shortcomings.
July 13, 2010 - Mediocre - DeathSpank's mishmash of genres is definitely entertaining at first, but it never manages to live up to its appealing concept. It's trying to combine the best parts of two beloved genres, but in doing so it creates a product that's not as good as either.
