Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
May 10, 2010 - Excellent - The uniting thread is the game's steadfast refusal to take itself seriously. In a medium glutted with old-school series reboots and HD graphical updates, Heroes is the rare remake that honors the past while also saying something new.

April 19, 2010 - Excellent - There's much to like about 3D Dot Game Heroes, and though it may seem cheap to appreciate a game where so much has been borrowed from games of the past, it's hard to deny that Heroes executes on these stolen ideas commendably.
May 12, 2010 - Excellent - 3D Dot Game Heroes is both modern and retro, silly and serious, easy and difficult, homage and parody. Players new to video games will certainly find the title to be a bit quirky, but anyone who played games throughout the eighties and nineties will surely find plenty to love.
April 20, 2010 - Good - Atlus seems to acknowledge 3DDGH as the lightweight diversion it is, pricing the game well below the standard for a PlayStation 3 title and bundling a bunch of Japan's bonus DLC content onto the disc to boot. That makes it an irresistible deal if you're one of those people who, like me, still enjoys playing through 8-bit action RPGs like Zelda and Crystalis.
April 26, 2010 - Good - The game delivers a series of minigames that go a long way to breaking up the flow, but this is essentially a higher-resolution take on Legend of Zelda. The $40 price helps things along, but it feels about ten dollars too high. This is a game that fans of classic titles should play at least once, but do they need to buy it and finish it? Probably not.
April 22, 2010 - Good - Ultimately, it's a lavish, pretty, and entertaining kneel at the altar of Miyamoto and as we all know, a game that's hard to imagine Nintendo ever making. Since Nintendo probably won't, I'm glad Silicon Studios tried.
April 19, 2010 - Good - Ultimately, 3D Dot Game Heroes combines the original Legend of Zelda's world with A Link to the Past-style gameplay, which proves to be an absolute blast. What the game lacks in originality it makes up for in nostalgic humor, polished gameplay, and length.

May 21, 2010 - Good - DGH knows this, and embraces it, but experienced gamers will find that the nostalgia wears off quickly, and newcomers may be put off by the limited - however well-aged - gameplay. It's a good alternative for Sony-lovers that never played the original masterpiece, or players looking to save a few dollars.
June 10, 2010 - Good - If you're on the fence about this game, and you have a Wii, spend $5 on the Virtual Console version of The Legend of Zelda. Spend an hour or two with it. Did you enjoy that? Now imagine it with gorgeous graphics and a lot of self-referential humor. That's 3D Dot Game Heroes, and while it's not for everyone, it's one of the most unique, charming and fun PS3 exclusives released so far this year.
April 30, 2010 - Good - The lighthearted atmosphere strengthens the appeal, throwing in quirky characters, chuckle-worthy references, and an infectious soundtrack to keep things fresh. 3D Dot Game Heroes is a pleasant retreat for anyone who pines for the good old days, but even those without nostalgic links to the past will find an enjoyable experience.
April 19, 2010 - Good - Though 3D Dot Game Heroes is a fun game on its own, it's impossible to divorce it from the games it parodies. Your overall enjoyment will depend on whether you're in on the joke or not.
April 20, 2010 - Good - Despite a few weaknesses, 3D Dot Game Heroes combines borrowed ideas with a novel presentation and a good sense of humor to rise above the level of shameless cash-in. Whether you've been playing games for more than a decade or not, it should be easy to find some enjoyment in the land of Dotnia.
May 14, 2010 - Good - By aping Zelda's gameplay so closely, the developers merely show how far they have to go to rival Nintendo's design skills - even with a formula that's more than 20 years old. 3DDGH is still worth a look but it runs out of ideas and impetus all too quickly.

April 16, 2010 - Good - Other Zelda imitators seem to lose sight of the playfulness and irreverence that Miyamoto and others infused classic games with, but 3D Dot Game Heroes never pretends that it's anything but a game, and games like 3D Dot Game Heroes should be played.
April 20, 2010 - Good - 3D Dot Game Heroes may bring nothing new to gaming, but it brings a classic style of game to PS3. It's fantastically warm-hearted and clearly made with real passion. The game itself has a few irritating issues, but all in all it's great to see a game like this both made and released on these shores.
April 19, 2010 - Good - 3D Dot Game Heroes is a game for gamers; a game for those who love the industry and embrace the geekery that comes with it. If you fall into that category, don't think twice about picking it up.
April 19, 2010 - Good - 3D Dot Game Heroes might be a blatant rip-off of Zelda, but in cribbing from one of the most enduring games of the 8-bit era - and allowing us to populate a faux Hyrule in a new, tactile way - the game more than earns the right to swipe.

June 1, 2010 - Mediocre - People say that imitation is the best form of flattery and 3D Dot Game Heroes embraces that. If you're planning on buying this game, however, just make sure that you enjoy its object of affection. If you do, this game is a tribute to all from your past that you've known and loved. If not, this game may not be the right one for you. [Issue #5, p.40]
April 19, 2010 - Mediocre - Every one of the problems it suffers is something that Legend of Zelda, through its longevity and the massive expertise of its designers, has either long since overcome or never had to worry about anyway. More or less everything 3D Dot Game Heroes does well, meanwhile, is something Zelda has already done better.
May 12, 2010 - Mediocre - If you look past the tricky visuals, something that's admittedly pretty hard to do, you'll see a game that's operating on a lot of borrowed charm. It's different, and in an absurd way, but 3D Dot Game Heroes is still so deeply referential that a lot of it doesn't really work if you're not already in on the joke.
