The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 7, 2012 - Excellent - Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a triumph that makes the prospect of a future MMO based on the same world and engine all the more enticing.
February 7, 2012 - Excellent - Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning isn't the perfect game. Its random technical hiccups and inconsistent art style certainly holds it back from even higher levels of greatness. But no matter what you're looking for, whether it be amazing gameplay, immersive storytelling or perhaps a riveting new world to explore as you fully customize and re-customize your character at will, Reckoning has it all.
February 7, 2012 - Good - This one's worth your time if you've got sixty bucks and several dozen hours to spare, but if you've still got an itch to play another action-RPG released in the last year or so, scratch that itch before you make the jump into Amalur.
February 9, 2012 - Good - You might want wonderful battles against cool creatures, terrific looting and leveling, and lots of ways to customize your skills and equipment. If so, then this is the world you should inhabit. The context is hardly inspired, but you'll be having so much fun that you may not care.
February 7, 2012 - Good - Like its reanimated main character, Reckoning starts slow and creaky, but give it a chance. Once you start sampling its many action-role-playing flavors, you'll discover a new franchise that delivers like a series that has been polished and tweaked for years.
February 7, 2012 - Good - Amalur does a lot of things better than some of the best out there. The combat is stronger than Skyrim's by a long shot, and the world feels more alive than games like Fable. It tells a good story well, and lays the foundation for a series we hope to see more of in the future, fate be damned.
March 6, 2012 - Good - Games like Reckoning, that push the genre in slightly new directions, help remind us that the old hoary chestnut that is the Role-Playing Game still has a few surprises up its sleeves, and rather than lumbering off to the place where game genres go to die, it has become more dynamic and unpredictable than it ever has been before.
March 24, 2012 - Good - If you're just looking to hit things, level up and manage a steady stream of loot drops, then Amalur delivers, but with Skyrim and The Witcher 2 still fresh in our minds, Amalur's world, story and inhabitants can't compete. It's good fun for a good while, but ultimately forgettable.
February 28, 2012 - Good - There's a lot to said for visuals these days [...] and having played the PC version extensively we're not sure we could then go to the console with a neutral mind-set. Swings and Roundabouts, as they say, but Reckoning is a good game all round and well worth getting - no matter the platform.
February 7, 2012 - Mediocre - The early looks at the game and the people associated with it promised great things, and I still regard the world of Amalur as one filled with potential. Reckoning, in trying to be so much at the same time, seems to have lost that essential identity necessary to drive this franchise. I hope another game will be forthcoming; however, until then, Amalur is awaiting its actual reckoning.
February 13, 2012 - Mediocre - This would make for an excellent 12-15 hour action game with its cool combat and fun player progression and a main story that's certainly no worse than most other videogame fare. However, as an especially long RPG masquerading as an open world design it simply overstays its welcome, it feels soulless, and tries to juggle too many balls at once.
