Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
January 30, 2012 - Excellent - Unabashedly retro in its mechanics, Dustforce wraps them up in a lovingly executed package, making it one of the best platformers of recent years - as long as you have plenty of patience.
January 18, 2012 - Excellent - It's -- in all likelihood -- the most stylish thing ever to prominently feature janitors, but it definitely doesn't lack in substance. So move over, rotund Italian plumbers of the world. There's a new blue-collar hop 'n' bop hero on the block.
February 10, 2012 - Excellent - Once you've traversed enough levels and embedded yourself in the rich atmosphere of Dustforce, you'll appreciate how it distinguishes itself from equally brilliant platformers like Braid and Limbo: rather than putting a new spin on sidescrolling, it spit-shines the core mechanics to near-perfection. The payoff: an exhilarating sense of kinetic agility.
January 17, 2012 - Excellent - It's ludicrously compelling, leaving me replaying the same opening section of the same level dozens of times in a row, as I - ever more furiously - restart it after making the same stupid mistake for the nineteen billionth time in a row. But that repetition is bearable because it's such a joy to play.
January 24, 2012 - Good - Even if you're just puttering around in the levels you are able to complete, it's nice to engage with a platforming game that's willing to push at the edges of your existing skills, forcing you to improve them in the process. It's a game that's not content to let you be content with yourself, and for that it's definitely worth playing.
January 23, 2012 - Good - I have played a lot of challenging games in my time, but Dustforce is one that has asked more of me as a gamer than any other in recent memory. It asked me to refine my skills like no other, to sharpen my reflexes and timing until they were absolutely perfect. [...] If you're looking for a challenge, look no further than this platforming gem.
January 25, 2012 - Good - Those with an addiction to high scores will love the many hours they spend smashing themselves repeatedly against the levels' pitiless design. And those who aren't up for the challenge? Dustforce will just take them to the cleaners.
January 18, 2012 - Good - Being able to perform the basic functions of resizing the game or playing in a window would be a welcome addition. While these issues do reveal some rough edges, the game proper is left largely unaffected. Sliding through the world of Dustforce is a fun, free-flowing experience, and it's easy to get hooked on it.
January 18, 2012 - Good - Dustforce easily merits the low, $10 barrier to entry. Some better in-game explanation concerning Dustforce's content and mechanics would really help, but this addictive platformer succeeds nonetheless.
January 20, 2012 - Good - If you're lacking the time-attack obsession gene, or get easily discouraged by trickier games, Dustforce probably isn't for you. Everyone else, get your brooms at the ready.
February 10, 2012 - Good - Dustforce is an attractive game with simple, but delightfully illustrated characters and worlds. More than that, the soundtrack from Lifeformed has quickly become a favorite album. These factors alone make it difficult to turn my back, but try as I might, I can't get into Dustforce's extreme levels of repetition.
January 19, 2012 - Good - It's a platformer at heart, but it's also about exploring the limits of your characters' movement and manipulating the environment for maximum success. This is a game that demands beautiful play and, for those people who get off on difficult games, will take your heart to the cleaners.
