Critic Reviews The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
February 17, 2010 - Good - We'd argue that we wouldn't want it any other way when it comes to Aliens vs Predator. It's deliriously gory, unwaveringly confident and spectacular fun. And, at the very least, it's far better than the films.
February 16, 2010 - Good - If your primary experience of gaming took place on the Wii, you'll find it impossibly frustrating. On the other hand, if you've rinsed everything from Modern Warfare 2 and are seeking a new challenge worthy of your skills, it has come at just the right time.
February 19, 2010 - Good - Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It's by no means a bad game and will almost certainly please fans more so than either movie effort, but when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.
February 25, 2010 - Good - [Aliens vs. Predator is] fun of the same brand you may have experienced ten years ago, but it's still fun now. And, matchmaking issues aside, the multiplayer is damn near addictive.
February 22, 2010 - Good - Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced. Fans of the movies will certainly find more to love in AvP than those without a knowledge of its celluloid counterparts, who might find the whole thing a little less palatable in comparison to the many superior FPSes currently available.
February 18, 2010 - Good - A more fleshed out marine campaign and more maps for the survival multiplayer game type would have made for an altogether better experience, but what Rebellion has delivered is still worth taking a look at. This isn't the perfect Aliens or Predator video game, but it does a lot right.
March 1, 2010 - Good - If you seek a multiplayer experience that oozes variety, this will be a prime gaming candidate for you. Fans of the iconic sci-fi creatures will be pleased to see a good game in this series once again, while FPS action fans will also find themselves enjoying this one, despite the few hiccups it may have.
February 22, 2010 - Mediocre - The action is often solid and the weapons and abilities are usually very fun to use, but the game's missing the glue that should be holding it all together. The campaigns are just too frustrating to be worth the trouble, and the online play suffers too many technical difficulties to lure you away from other, superior online games.
February 19, 2010 - Mediocre - Scrappy where it needed to be polished, clumsy where it needed to be nimble, the game wears its iconic characters as a shield, happy to serve up scripted shocks but offering nothing that might actually surprise.
February 27, 2010 - Mediocre - Die hard fans of these two movie franchises will been sorely disappointed to see how Rebellion has treated such a rich and interesting source material. All in all, Alien vs. Predator is a game that just feels rushed.
March 2, 2010 - Mediocre - The game has cutting edge visuals and Hollywood-level production values, but the gameplay isn't anywhere near as powerful or compelling as you would think the franchise would allow for. A real shame.
February 18, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens vs. Predator is sometimes enjoyable but never escapes an overwhelming sense of carelessness, so while it may remind you of the good old days, it fails to recapture them.
February 19, 2010 - Mediocre - The original concept of AvP was ahead of its time but this has taken a retrograde step: it's a watered-down version clearly tailored for a broader market.
March 8, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens and Predator both have always been about finding new variations on "Oh god, we're gonna die." AvP fails to make that happen with scripting and storytelling, but when a couple of adept players are stalking random panickers like myself, this really threatens to be the game we hoped it would be.
March 15, 2010 - Mediocre - Rebellion set out to give the AvP franchise an HD overhaul. What it ended up with is a game that FPS fans may certainly appreciate, even if they would be forgiven for feeling like they're playing a decade-old game with a new lick of paint.
February 21, 2010 - Mediocre - Aliens vs Predator occasionally offers brief moments of entertainment, but it's ultimately let down by an unimaginative approach to the single-player mode that never quite manages to match the terror, suspense and brilliance of the original movies.
February 18, 2010 - Mediocre - Fans of the Aliens vs. Predator series should get some brief enjoyment from this latest gaming iteration, but the generic combat might be enough to scare most video game players away.
February 18, 2010 - Poor - While the game isn't a total loss, there's just not enough here to make the game recommendable. As it is now, AvP is mostly a visually updated version of an eleven year-old game, and that's not what fans of the franchises or first-person shooters deserve.
