Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
October 12, 2009 - Excellent - Aion's greatest weapon is beauty. It lacks the depth and experienced wisdom of its 4-year-old rival, but Aion manages to make WOW show its age. It's still too early to judge Aion's endgame content, but that may be the true test of whether the game will have real staying power, or be just another passing pretty face.
October 8, 2009 - Excellent - [Aion is] finely balanced and very well engineered. It delivers some real innovation in the genre, particularly in game balance and graphics, and it's a refreshing and very real alternative for MMORPG players.
September 21, 2009 - Good - If you're the sort of player who likes an online world to bend to your whim, rather than bend you to its own - then committing to Aion is a gamble, because there's not much else to be wrung from it but the grind. A streamlined, structured, gorgeous grind, an addictive and even rewarding grind if you're that way inclined, but a grind nonetheless.
October 5, 2009 - Good - Aion is definitely a refreshing looking MMO; online gamers tired of certain other franchises will initially feel like they're really doing something new. Of course, after a few hours it'll become apparent that there isn't much radically different here, but it's all very well polished, very well balanced sameness.

October 8, 2009 - Good - Aion may not the new messiah, but it's certainly an alternative for those who haven't been all that satisfied with other titles in the genre. It's a polished, complete, interesting, graphically breathtaking example that proves other companies can develop intuitive and playable MMOs.
November 16, 2009 - Good - [Aion is] a well put together package that only falters in that it sticks to the same formula that I've seen in MMOs since their inception. It's a highly polished experience that will satisfy you if what you're looking for is yet another MMO, albeit one with a few more bells and whistles.

October 8, 2009 - Good - Aion is a beautiful, well-polished, well-presented game that introduces a new combat mechanic in fantasy MMOs, fighting on wings. In fact, it's such a lovely game that we wish there were more of it.

October 27, 2009 - Good - The game needs more zones, and needs to encourage more exploration of its world. Its quests and story need fleshing out more. It just doesn't feel complete, somehow. But there's still a lot to be enjoyed in Aion.
October 23, 2009 - Good - The emphasis on grinding, the linear environment and the rather uninspired early levels pose a serious threat to this games growth. Whilst these are things that cannot be changed, it will depend on what NCSoft will do next which will ultimately make or break it.
October 13, 2009 - Mediocre - My interest in Aion ultimately began to wane once I'd leveled past the teens and into the 20s. Compared to more recent titles in the genre, the leveling in Aion feels like progression at a snail's pace. That alone wouldn't be so terrible if there were an abundance of quests and content to fill that time -- there isn't.
Geoff Hunt
November 10, 2009 - Mediocre - Overall, I cannot recommend Aion to just about anyone. Folks who were big into Lineage 2 might get a kick out it, but I don't think this is the game for the Western audience. At its best, Aion plays like a constrained, low-content version of WoW.
Toni Schwartz
November 10, 2009 - Mediocre - If you play MMORPGs for the journey and the storyline, then Aion: the Tower of Eternity is not for you. There aren't enough quests to engage you in the story, and spending days grinding mobs just to level is not something many people relish doing.
December 8, 2009 - Mediocre - If the zones you spend your time in from levels 10 to 50 were half as well put together as the starter zones, then this would be an easy game to recommend, but that's currently not the case.
October 8, 2009 - Mediocre - Only the sumptuous scenery keeps you going, and when the game won't let you fully explore it, it's hard to find the will to carry on.
