Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
November 5, 2009 - Good - If you haven't played the latest Guitar Hero or are looking for something that all ages of players can get into, [this is] a respectable choice. However, its mostly flat song list and almost complete lack of anything significantly new may have you feeling a sense of deja vu that can't be shaken.
November 3, 2009 - Good - Band Hero is fun and has a bunch of good tunes if you like junk food music like I do, but this is the same experience you've been getting out of the Guitar Hero On Tour franchise.
December 9, 2009 - Good - Band Hero works well enough on the DS. The core gameplay is good, and the song list is diverse enough that you can play this for a good amount of time before becoming bored.
November 3, 2009 - Mediocre - If it weren't for the game's shortsighted and unintuitive peripherals, there might actually be something worthwhile here -- assuming you dig the soundtrack, anyhow. But as is, wannabe rockers on the DS will probably want to hold off until the next generation of portable band sims arrives.
December 15, 2009 - Mediocre - Band Hero on the DS is a step in the wrong direction for portable music games. They've tried to go big on the peripheral front, but in doing so they've excluded a huge chunk of gamers in a wide range of ages.
November 3, 2009 - Poor - Band Hero might hold the attention of some younger gamers for a few hours, but it's a game that deserves to be forgotten.
November 24, 2009 - Poor - Even if the peripherals kicked serious butt -- and they don't -- you just can't hold a jam session with the DS. Add the fact that there's no journey to the Hall of Fame, and all you've got is a sad tale of the one-man band that went nowhere and a terribly cramped wrist.
November 18, 2009 - Poor - The gameplay is still fun if you're willing to suffer through painful hand cramping from playing guitar and bass, severely wounded vocal registry, and a general lack of precision provided by the Drum Grip. The peripherals do more to kill the experience than enhance it, which totally defeats the purpose of this pricey package.
