Critic Reviews
The following reviews are used to calculate the overall reception for this game. All applicable scores are converted to our simplified rating system based on the specifics offered by each publication or the tone of each review. You can read more about how we do this here.
January 26, 2012 - Excellent - Revelations is a long way from a perfect action game, but it is a near perfect 3DS package. Forget Mercenaries 3D - it's time to leave the port and board Resi's true 3D maiden voyage.
January 26, 2012 - Excellent - Resident Evil: Revelations is just what fans of the series and bored 3DS owners needed. The story is interesting with the added bonus of actually being coherent for once, the gameplay feels perfect on the 3DS, and it's one of the greatest-looking portable games I've ever seen, especially with the 3D cranked up.
February 6, 2012 - Excellent - This is a content-rich title with plenty to see and do with achievements, unlockables, hidden content, and multiple game modes that provide value well beyond the standard campaign offering. Its robustness is appreciated and important because it feels like a game that's actually worth 40 bucks.
February 9, 2012 - Excellent - Resident Evil Revelations deserves to be a full, numbered iteration in the series, in recognition of the excellent part it plays in filling in the Resident Evil story. It's every bit a fully-blown Resident Evil game and is absolutely worthy of a place in any fan's collection.
January 26, 2012 - Excellent - Parts of the Queen Zenobia will surprise and delight, others are starkly reminiscent of old series haunts, but Resident Evil Revelations keeps a tight hold on what made the original games so utterly special. That it exudes such overbearing tension from such a tiny screen is a triumph. This is the first must-buy title of 2012.
January 26, 2012 - Good - The promise of a portable and blockbuster RE is mostly realized, and the control improvements and sense of scale translate effectively, but I sincerely hope Capcom chooses to skew from RE's cheesy past and make more memorable adventures moving forward.
February 13, 2012 - Good - Resident Evil: Revelations, is an inspired culmination of what's come before that splices the series' DNA, hacks off some staid traditions, and sews on new legs for good measure.
February 10, 2012 - Good - Though perhaps not essential to series canon, the myriad thrills and well-presented scenarios make this a pretty good appetizer for what will hopefully be a revitalizing effort in the form of Resident Evil 6.
January 26, 2012 - Good - Resident Evil: Revelations is less a return to traditional survival horror and more a game with an identity crisis. It's still excellent in places, though.
February 6, 2012 - Good - Revelations proves that, while traditional survival horror isn't due a comeback anytime soon, there are certainly compromises that games can make in order to get a fresh taste of that old, beautifully soul-destroying flavor.
January 25, 2012 - Good - Resident Evil: Revelations is gorgeous, huge, and offers the most fully-featured online co-op experience on 3DS. The single-player isn't quite the survival horror comeback Capcom promised but, with its brilliant take on score attack, Raid mode ensures Revelations delivers at least once on its title.

February 17, 2012 - Good - Despite some issues, Resident Evil: Revelations is a damn fine demonstration of what the 3DS is capable of, and can be acknowledged as the best action game currently available on the handheld. However, where it falters slightly is as an ambassador for a return to former glories for the Resident Evil franchise.
January 29, 2012 - Good - As a core game, Revelations proves that the 3DS can not only display amazing console quality graphics, but control just fine as a handheld; with or without the optional circle pad add-on. Revelations comes up short in many respects, but ultimately it may be enough to scratch that Resident itch until Raccoon City and RE6 hit later this year.
January 26, 2012 - Good - Resident Evil: Revelations splices the survival horror DNA of classic Resident Evil with the new, brisker strain of Resident Evils 4 and 5. The result isn't an Umbrella-style crime against nature, but a healthy, happy hybrid: an optimum mix of tense, creepy exploration and stop-and-shoot action, telling a tale of bioterrorism and unwise genetic meddling aboard an abandoned ocean liner.
January 30, 2012 - Good - Out of everything available on the 3DS, Resident Evil Revelations is a high profile effort that stands above most of the software you'll find out there. The thoroughly M-rated adventure fulfills nearly every desire of RE fans, simultaneously fitting the new handheld perfectly thanks to a new episodic approach to storytelling.
February 1, 2012 - Good - The meaty campaign is short on scares, but well-designed and engaging, while the raid mode will sink its claws into you after just a couple missions. While tip-toeing the line between old series staples and its latest evolutions, Resident Evil: Revelations proves that what's old can be new again.
January 26, 2012 - Good - While Revelations may not quite make you salivate for a whole new console, Resident Evil and 3DS fans will be jumping all over it like zombies. With the PlayStation Vita looming, that's got to be welcome news for Nintendo.
February 7, 2012 - Good - Resident Evil Revelations is a great handheld game, one that not only pushes the boundaries and standards of the Nintendo 3DS but one that recaptures a long-forgotten spirit of a classic franchise. Make no mistake about it, this is a full Resident Evil adventure that isn't watered down because it's in portable form. That's no small accomplishment.

January 31, 2012 - Good - The back and forth of its narrative and abysmal choice of characters sour a story that's trying too hard to be clever and compelling. It's hard not to be in awe of the rest of it, though. Best enjoyed alone, in the dark, with a pair of headphones and the 3D slider cranked up, Resident Evil Revelations is a worthwhile venture for fans and thrill seekers alike.
February 2, 2012 - Good - Give me reasons to run down this corridor yet again, ideally with a friend, shooting the same guns at the same monsters over and over, and if your gunplay is good enough, I will gladly do it. Resident Evil: Revelations' gunplay is good enough.
January 27, 2012 - Mediocre - It takes the best and worst of Resident Evils past and present, and spot welds them together unevenly. If the designers had committed wholeheartedly to either polarity of action or horror, Revelations may have been a headshot, but what we're left with is more like a glancing blow.
February 1, 2012 - Mediocre - Diehard fans of Resident Evil like me may see this title as just something to tide them over until Resident Evil 6 comes out later this year. But as for anyone looking for a game changer on the 3DS - keep looking.
January 1, 2012 - Mediocre - Handheld editions of big console titles often feel like straight to video sequels - looking the part but lacking the polish - and Revelations is no different. It nails the atmosphere in its hybrid design, but those crucial sparks of brilliance that make the series so great, no matter which of its eras you prefer... they're as rare as a single use rocket launcher.
February 6, 2012 - Mediocre - Revelations could have mitigated the effects of its limitations with a more memorable story and more appealing characters, but the game doesn't deliver enough on any one level to make it easily recommendable if you aren't a diehard fan. Revelations isn't exactly a bad Resident Evil game, but the series has certainly seen better.
January 25, 2012 - Mediocre - Resident Evil: Revelations hooked long-time fans with the promise it would return to the series' survival horror roots, but couldn't resist an attempt at reaching a wider audience. Instead of producing a splintered and botched attempt at blending action and horror, Capcom should have stuck to its guns.
